Can a vacuum cleaner be repaired if the motor is burnt out?

Yes, in most cases a burnt-out motor can be replaced. This typically happens when the vacuum is run with restricted airflow for too long, causing it to overheat and fail. Signs include loud noises, a burnt smell, or no response at all when powered on.

Replacing the motor is usually more cost-effective than buying a new vacuum, especially for premium brands like Miele, Dyson, or Electrolux. Our technicians can replace the motor and test the appliance to make sure it’s safe and performing correctly.

How often should I replace my vacuum filters?

Filter replacement depends on the type and how often you use the vacuum. Foam filters should be cleaned every month and replaced every 3–6 months. HEPA filters generally last 6–12 months, but if you have pets or allergies, more frequent replacement is recommended.

Clogged filters not only reduce suction but also stress the motor, leading to early failure. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations and use genuine replacement parts where possible.

Can you repair cordless vacuum cleaners?

Why is my vacuum cleaner hard to push across carpets?

If your vacuum feels like it’s getting stuck, the brush roll might be jammed, the height setting may be too low, or the suction may be too strong for soft carpets. Some models have a carpet-height adjustment dial or automatic sensors—check these first.

Clogged wheels or damaged brush bearings can also affect smooth movement. A service can restore proper brush function and ensure your vacuum glides easily over all surfaces.

Why does my vacuum cleaner smell bad?

A bad smell from your vacuum usually comes from a buildup of dust, pet hair, or trapped moisture inside the filters or bin. Over time, bacteria and mould can form in a damp vacuum, especially if it’s been used on wet carpets or if liquid has been sucked in.

If the vacuum smells burnt, it could indicate a worn belt, motor damage, or debris trapped in the brush roller. Start by cleaning or replacing the filters and emptying the bin thoroughly. If the smell persists, we recommend a deep internal clean and inspection to avoid damage to components.

What causes the brush roll to stop spinning?

A brush roll that doesn’t spin can’t agitate carpet fibres properly, reducing cleaning effectiveness. Common causes include hair or string tangled around the roller, a broken drive belt, or worn brush bearings.

Some vacuums also have automatic shut-off sensors that deactivate the brush roll when jammed. If the belt is broken or loose, it will need replacing. We can diagnose the exact cause, clean the roller assembly, and replace worn parts to get it working again.
