When something goes wrong with an important household appliance like a fridge freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, or dryer, you usually want to get things sorted quickly.
Obviously, you can’t go long in the summer without a fridge and most families struggle to last a week without a washing machine.
There is no easy answer to the question of whether or not it’s worth repairing an appliance, but our experience in the appliance repair industry has taught us to consider these 3 things when deciding whether to repair or replace appliances.
How old is the appliance?
The first thing to consider is the age of your appliance. Most appliances have an expected lifespan, for example, a washing machine or dryer is expected to last at least ten years, and a vacuum cleaner is around seven.
Obviously, this varies between brands and models, and you should get a good idea of how long your appliance is expected to last from the manufacturers.
In a poll set up by which.co.uk, 90% of people felt it was worth it to repair rather than replace appliances.
What is the cost of repair, and what is the cost to replace?
This may seem obvious, but this is the information you need when considering whether a repair is worthwhile.

What is the current value of your appliance?
To work out the current value of your appliance, divide the original cost of the appliance by the number of years you expect it to last. This way you can get a rough idea of how much value the appliance will lose per year.
Subtract the number of years you’ve had it for a rough indication of its value now. If the cost to repair is greater, you may be better off buying something new.
But what about small appliances?
Small appliances like kettles, toasters, irons, food processors and blenders often work the hardest in the home, but this doesn’t mean they have a short lifespan.
Many small appliances can be repaired quickly and easily.
It’s worth buying good quality products at the outset – these will last a lot longer than the cheaper brands.
There are many factors to consider when deciding whether to replace or repair your appliances, but good quality appliances are built to last and often only need small repairs to get them going again.
