Why does my vacuum cleaner smell bad?

A bad smell from your vacuum usually comes from a buildup of dust, pet hair, or trapped moisture inside the filters or bin.

Over time, bacteria and mould can form in a damp vacuum, especially if it’s been used on wet carpets or if liquid has been sucked in. If the vacuum smells burnt, it could indicate a worn belt, motor damage, or debris trapped in the brush roller.

Start by cleaning or replacing the filters and emptying the bin thoroughly. If the smell persists, we recommend a deep internal clean and inspection to avoid damage to components.

Why won’t my vacuum cleaner turn on?

If your vacuum won’t start at all, it could be due to a faulty power cord, damaged plug, blown fuse, or a tripped safety switch. Many vacuums have internal thermal cut-off switches that prevent overheating—if this is triggered, you’ll need to wait for it to cool down before it turns on again.

Other causes include a faulty switch, dead battery (for cordless models), or a blown motor. If basic troubleshooting doesn’t solve it, our team can inspect the electrical components and carry out safe, professional repairs.

Why does my vacuum cleaner keep turning off during use?

If your vacuum switches off mid-use, it’s often a sign that it’s overheating. Blocked filters, a full bin, or restricted airflow make the motor work harder, generating excess heat. Once it hits a temperature threshold, the thermal cut-off switch turns it off to protect internal components.

Letting the unit cool down helps, but the underlying issue should be fixed to prevent repeated shutdowns. In some cases, faulty power switches or damaged internal wiring may also be the cause.

What causes the brush roll to stop spinning?

A brush roll that doesn’t spin can’t agitate carpet fibres properly, reducing cleaning effectiveness. Common causes include hair or string tangled around the roller, a broken drive belt, or worn brush bearings. Some vacuums also have automatic shut-off sensors that deactivate the brush roll when jammed.

If the belt is broken or loose, it will need replacing. We can diagnose the exact cause, clean the roller assembly, and replace worn parts to get it working again.

How often should I replace my vacuum filters?

Filter replacement depends on the type and how often you use the vacuum. Foam filters should be cleaned every month and replaced every 3–6 months. HEPA filters generally last 6–12 months, but if you have pets or allergies, more frequent replacement is recommended.

Clogged filters not only reduce suction but also stress the motor, leading to early failure. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations and use genuine replacement parts where possible

Can you repair cordless vacuum cleaners?

Yes, we repair all major cordless vacuum brands. Common issues include reduced run time, battery charging problems, blocked internal channels, or motor failure. Stick vacuums like Dyson often develop performance problems due to battery wear or clogged filters.

For Premium Domestic Appliances:
Service Call – $242.00 inc GST
This Cost Includes:
– A mobile service van visit to your home, office, or workplace by one of our trained appliance technicians.
– Up to 30 minutes of labour is included during the initial visit.
– Approximately 75% of repairs are completed within the first 30-minute visit.
– If additional time is required, extra labour is charged at $49.50 (inc. GST) per 15 minutes.
– No additional service call fee applies if the technician needs to return with parts. Only the labour charge of $49.50 (inc. GST) per 15 minutes, plus the cost of any required parts, will apply for the return visit and installation.

For Commercial Appliances:
Service Call – $286.00 inc GST
This Cost Includes:

– Approximately 75% of repairs are completed within the first 30-minute visit.
– If additional time is required, extra labour is charged at $49.50 (inc. GST) per 15 minutes.
– No additional service call fee applies if the technician needs to return with parts. Only the labour charge of $49.50 (inc. GST) per 15 minutes, plus the cost of any required parts, will apply for the return visit and installation.

Please note: Our technicians carry a selection of commonly used, high-turnover parts in their service vans. However, due to the wide variety of appliances and components across brands and models, not all parts can be stocked on hand at all times.

The Nationwide Appliance Repairs Parts Team will promptly inform customers of the cost of parts either through email or over the phone, and for service recalls, we guarantee a 3-month of labour warranty along with a generous 12-month parts warranty on all our work.

Within the first 0 to 3 months of attending the job, if the same fault recurs, there will be no charge, ensuring customer satisfaction and peace of mind.
