When your Sunbeam mixer starts leaking oil, it can be concerning, but it’s a common issue that occurs with older or heavily used mixers.
This leakage happens when the lubricant inside the gearbox, which keeps the gears running smoothly, begins to separate and ooze out.
The oil and grease are designed to lubricate the internal parts of the mixer, but over time, the oil can separate from the grease, especially if the mixer hasn’t been used frequently or has been stored in a warm environment.
Several factors contribute to this problem. One primary reason is the age of the mixer. Over time, the grease inside the machine can degrade, leading to oil separation. Additionally, temperature fluctuations can cause the grease to break down, making the oil leak more likely.
If you notice oil leaking, it’s essential to address it promptly. Continued use of the mixer without sufficient lubrication can cause significant damage to the gears and other internal components.
To fix this issue, the mixer needs to be taken apart, the old grease cleaned out, and new food-safe grease applied. While this can be a DIY project for those comfortable with appliance repair, it’s often best to have it done by a professional.
This ensures that the mixer is correctly reassembled and that the new grease is appropriately applied, extending the life of your Sunbeam mixer. Regular maintenance and proper storage can help prevent oil leaks and keep your mixer in excellent working condition.
The life expectancy of a Sunbeam mixer is generally impressive, often lasting 15 to 30 years or even longer with proper care and maintenance. This longevity is due to the high-quality materials and robust construction that Sunbeam mixers are known for.
These mixers feature powerful motors and durable metal gears that are built to withstand heavy use, making them a staple in both home and professional kitchens.
Several factors influence the life expectancy of a Sunbeam mixer:
– Regular maintenance: Plays a crucial role. Ensuring that the mixer is cleaned thoroughly after each use prevents food particles from causing wear and tear.
– Checking and replacing worn parts: Periodically replacing parts such as the beater, bowl, and attachments can extend the mixer’s lifespan.
– Greasing internal gears: Greasing the internal gears every few years, especially for older models, is essential to prevent oil leaks and keep the mixer running smoothly.
Usage patterns also affect longevity. Mixers that are used frequently for heavy-duty tasks like kneading bread dough may experience more wear than those used occasionally for lighter tasks. However, even with frequent use, these mixers are designed to handle significant workloads without compromising performance.
Proper storage is another critical factor. Storing the mixer in a cool, dry place and avoiding exposure to extreme temperatures can prevent the internal grease from breaking down and leaking.
Absolutely—in most cases, repairing your old Sunbeam mixer in Melbourne is far more cost-effective and worthwhile than buying a new one. Sunbeam mixers, especially older models, are known for their durability, metal construction, and long-lasting internal components. Many of these mixers were built to run for decades with proper maintenance.
At Nationwide Appliance Repair Melbourne, we frequently service Sunbeam mixers that are 10, 15, or even 30 years old. These machines were engineered with quality in mind and are often much more robust than many of the newer models available today. Before deciding to replace your unit, it’s worth understanding the common issues and how easily they can be resolved.
Why Repairing Is Usually the Better Choice
-Cost-Effective: 90% of our customers in Melbourne find that repairs cost less than half the price of a new mixer.
-Eco-Friendly: Repairing extends the life of your appliance and keeps high-quality metal parts out of landfill.
-Preserve Quality: Many older models were made with heavier-duty parts than newer mass-market units.
-Faster Turnaround: Avoid shipping delays and retail markups by servicing locally in Melbourne with Nationwide Appliance Repair.
When Might Replacement Be Better?
There are a few rare cases when replacement may be the more logical option:
-Severely damaged motor windings where full replacement exceeds the value of the unit.
-Extensive rust or water damage to internal components.
-Non-genuine or previously botched repairs that compromise long-term reliability.
If we discover any of these during inspection, we’ll provide honest advice and cost estimates upfront.

A burning smell coming from your mixer is always cause for concern and typically points to motor overheating or electrical component failure. This issue is most commonly reported by customers who’ve been mixing heavy dough for extended periods.
If you’re in Melbourne and your Sunbeam mixer smells like burnt rubber or wiring, stop using it immediately. The smell may be from:
-An overheating motor
-Worn carbon brushes
-A failing speed control board
-Internal friction due to lack of lubrication
At Nationwide Appliance Repair, we strongly recommend turning off and unplugging the appliance and booking it in for a professional inspection. Our Melbourne workshop is equipped to test internal circuits, replace burnt components, and clean or lubricate where necessary.
This usually indicates an issue with the speed control plate or governor inside the mixer. These components regulate how much power is delivered to the motor based on the setting you choose.
If your Sunbeam mixer is stuck on one speed—or worse, won’t adjust speeds at all—it could be due to a misaligned control lever, a faulty resistor, or wear on the internal contacts. Melbourne’s dry, dusty conditions can also contribute to internal corrosion or clogging in older mixers.
At Nationwide Appliance Repair, our local technicians can calibrate or replace the speed control components with precision. We’ve worked on everything from the Artisan series to heavy-duty commercial models in Melbourne cafés. Never force the dial or continue using the unit at a single speed—it risks long-term motor damage.
